Twitter advertises a fee of $100 per month for the base layer of its API

Twitter has announced that it will charge $100 per month for the lowest level API. This comes a week after the social media giant announced that it would be shutting down free API access.

The new Core Fee 4 will allow developers to achieve “low level API usage”, without specifying how this will be implemented.

Twitter planned a February 9 date to shut down free access to its API, but later extended it to February 13, but failed to provide details on restructuring API pricing and access levels. The extension may mean that some developers will not be able to plan their changes.

Twitter’s announcement last week that it would stop free access to its API angered many developers with many criticizing the move, especially those who mocked bots posting information or images. In response to the widespread criticism that followed the announcement, Elon Musk said that Twitter would provide a free API for bots that post “good” content. But the company in a new series of announcements said it would provide a light, write-only API for these bot developers with a limit to posting 1,500 tweets per month (or two tweets per hour).

“A new form of free access will be introduced because this is so important to our ecosystem – limited to generating up to 1,500 tweets per month for a single authenticated user token, including logging in with Twitter.

The social media powerhouse also added that it would terminate on February 13th the value of its premium API, part of version 1.1, with the company adding that developers can apply for enterprise access, though it’s unclear if users who subscribe to access Elevators using API v2 will be affected.

With the new announcement paving the way for core API levels and bots, uncertainty around academic research is growing. Before Elon Musk took over, the company through its previous management had researchers with private access to API v2 but no information has emerged yet that access will be available. Deprecated with deprecation of free API layers. Researchers use this data to indicate trends about hate speech or misinformation on the platform, so it is important that these researchers have permission to access the data to help monitor safety issues on Twitter.
