BMW and the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) held a special ceremony to celebrate the export of the two millionth BMW from the US to Germany.
The event was built around the loading of the 2M luxury BMW X5 M50d space grey metallic SUV onto WWL’s vessel Elektra at the port of Charleston. WWL is one of several carriers that regularly transports BMW units from the US port.
Personally driving the car to the ship was Manfred Erlacher, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing.
“Together with such partners as SCPA, BMW has become part of the fabric of this great state and is a wonderful illustration of what can be achieved when federal, state and local government work hand-in-hand with business,” he said at the event.
The South Carolina Ports Authority played a key role in BMW’s decision to locate in South Carolina, and its first import vehicles were handled through the port of Charleston in 1994. SCPA also serves BMW’s containerised shipping needs, handling import engines and transmissions from Germany and export maintenance parts as well as vehicle kits for emerging markets.
